Stock Car Speedway. 6 cars, 5 laps, 5 heats each scoring 4 for win, 3 for second,2 for third, 1 for fourth. run like the speedway grand prix format, drivers starting in various grid positions, with top 12 to semis, highest scorers pick starting positions, and final.

There are a couple of formats I have wondered whether would work; perhaps just as "one off" meetings in the year. As it happens, I think the V8's may have already got there first with one or both. Having said that, they may be worth considering.

1. NZ Type Format:- Graded starts would need to be suspended for the night. Cars would race over 3 heats for points from closed grids with positions being allocated at front, middle and back for each of the heats. What would be interesting is if there were sufficient cars (40+?) to split into 2 groups (group 1 - 50% of cars having the higher positions in the Points chart and group 2 - 50% having the lower positions in the Points.) This would give 6 races overall. Winner(s) would be top point scorer(s) over 3 races. If sufficient cars for 2 groups, it would be interesting to see whether the higher or lower graders provided the most entertaining racing.

2. A Pairs Championship:- For those who attend, the highest person in the Points is paired with the lowest, second highest in points is paired with second lowest and so on. (Format would need some thinking about if not "all in" so that pairs could race in same races; may be a 2/3rds format but ensuring pairs are allocated same heats). Normal graded starts could be used with the pair who score most combined points (may be just over the heats) being declaired that years Pairs Champions. May be, if sufficient cars, some sort of qualification system for top 15 "pairs" could be devised to give a 30 car Final with points scored also counting towards the Pairs total. Would be an ideal opportunity for lower graders to get some set up tips from the sports Stars and Superstars.

Just a thought.
Andy

Just a comment on the Le Mans style starts. This is a no-no even on circuits these days, especially since drivers tend to drive off first and think about doing up belts later in the race!

I have seen it done in a modified format for Le Mans cars at historic events. Drivers run to their cars, jump in and drive the green flag lap. They then come to a stop on the grid, the scrutineers run down the grid checking that belts have been done up correctly and the cars then take the start as normal.

Not sure it's much of a spectacle though.

I'd suggest a Dash for the Cash event with a winner takes all prize. Some of those have been memorable! Maybe open it to the top five/eight/ten (delete as applicable) points scorers from Scunny and Sheffield?

I must also take the opportunity to thank Steve for his part in getting Scunthorpe up and running. It's the first time since my teens that I've lived within earshot of a stock car track, and it's brought this person at least back into the sport as a ticket buyer!

Steve Goring has put himself forward to `help' anyone else pm me, I intend to organise an informal meting of the little working group next couple of weeks and to harness the ideas into a workable programme and plan it from there . Involvement of Kids Club members is paramount - and we will be sorting out the visit to the Wainman camp in the next week - welcome back John!

I really like Tim's idea of the Speedway style format. This would provide exciting racing without the need for big grids.

May I suggest having the heats run as all white, yellow, blue etc with the top points scorers from each respective grade going through to two semi finals of four cars and a final consisting of the top two from the semis.

Four cars heats would be fine around Owlerton due to the tight size of the track. Could F1's run a clutch start?

Remember way back on stoxnet when discussing something different that you'd like to see with the f1's..
Speedway style (4 car per race) individual knockout type format was one thing that recieved a good response and its stood the test of time as Tim's suggestion as also created positive feedback a year or two on.
I actually remember doing a format for it based on qualifying races for points (cars per race could be flexible depending on initial competitor numbers)
then quarters,semis on a 1st 2nd through ko basis...4 cars per race.
Then a 2 legged final (points combined) race off in the event of a tie.
Won't go into everything but i think it had most things covered like having cars waiting on the infield so you only have to open the pit gate after so many races etc etc ..more to it than meets the eye but workable.
..The F1 Sprint Cup or Championship...sounds good and different, could even turn into an annual event if a success.Esp if a good sponsor was found.
Well thats what gets my vote anyway Very Happy

What about some match races, I think they used to run them at Brafield years ago. Perhaps 4 heats of 2, 3/4 laps per race, progressing to semi final then final. Could even be run with the cars starting on opposite sides of track, see who can close the gap.
